Hello, Bluebottle Fans! My name is Jessie Oleson, and I am the new owner of Bluebottle Art Gallery (along with my dear husband, Danny Oleson). We are having so much fun so far at the gallery, making a few changes (including a sweet mural in the back!) and preparing for a grand re-opening on May 8 as we bring in more artwork from my company, CakeSpy Shop!

And there is a lot of other exciting stuff going on. Tomorrow is our first Artist Reception, from 5-8 p.m, as part of the Capitol Hill Artwalk. We will have a totally sweet collection of paintings by Ryan Berkley of Berkley Illustration. Here are some of the paintings on show:

Mother nature never looked so dapper. Ryan Berkley continues his exploration of an ancestral anthropomorphic animal world with a new collection of animals wearing their Sunday finest.

Ryan Berkley creates comic book inspired art and prints for your walls or family photo albums. Perhaps best known for his "Animals in Suits" series, Ryan likes to tackle surreal subject matter in a very friendly way. He works from his home in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Lucy and their wacky epileptic dog, Walker.

In 2008 Dutch Door Press embarked on an ambitious project to create a print for the state bird and flower of every US state. The resulting series is entitled "The Birds & Blooms of the 50 States". Each piece is an original illustration and is letterpress printed in an edition of 100.

Fort the show at Bluebottle we have the first 15 in the series. there are plans to do the rest of the series in the future but for now hope you find your state!

New Owner of Bluebottle!

We are excited to announce we have found a fabulous buyer for Bluebottle! We were really overwhelmed and pleased with the number of interested parties looking to take the reins. We felt it said a great deal about the enthusiasm there is in the Seattle community to support local independent art, craft and design. Bluebottle will continue to have a similar vibe and support emerging local talent in the Seattle community! The new owner will take over operations starting April 1st.

WHO IS THE NEW OWNER?

Jessie Oleson, that's who. Jessie is basically a triple threat: an artist, writer, and baker. She is the creator of the popular baked goods website cakespy.com, which spun off into a line of products and original artwork which she sells online at cakespyshop.com and at various Seattle retail locations. Having garnered a very sweet following by showing work around town and around the country, she's also cultivated relationships with some of the sweetest artists around, including many who currently show at Bluebottle! In taking over the Bluebottle business, she plans on continuing the tradition of showing the best indie art around, and making Seattle a sweeter place!

She will be assisted in this new endeavor by her husband, Danny Oleson, a fixture in the Seattle music scene from the bands Exohxo and Speaker Speaker, an overall cool guy and arts enthusiast!

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW?

Many of you have asked what Matthew and I are going to do now. We are please to annouce that we will be focusing exclusively on Matthew's work. Matthew will continue in his career as a children's book author and illustrator. His children's colors board book Flowers was just release last week and two more are lined up for publication within the next few years. In addition to Matthew's books we are expaning our children's clothing line featuring Matthew's loveable but cheeky monkey world characters. We will be showcasing this line online at matthewporterart.com as well as at independent children's boutiques throughout the US.

Pratt Fine Arts Center is currently seeking qualified applicants for an Evening Administrative Assistant

Compensation: $11.00 per Hour

Structure: Evening Administrative Assistant is a part-time, 4.75 hours per week position that reports to the Front Desk Manager. The position will consist of Saturday evening shifts and may require some additional shifts. This position is non-benefited.

General Duties: The Evening Administrative Assistant performs public reception and information functions, and supports a variety of administrative efforts. This position works closely with the Front Desk Staff, the Business Director and in support of the Educational, Development and Technical Staff.

Responsibilities:
Reception and Resource Center
Provide a welcoming environment for all visitors.
Answer and direct incoming calls.
Provide initial information about Pratt to the public, potential students, studio artists, and volunteers. Answer general questions about classes, facilities programs and galleries.
Troubleshoot problems that staff and students may have and/or direct them to appropriate person(s).
Receive, direct, and complete paperwork, e.g. registrations, donations, memberships, studio payments, etc.
Accept and complete or direct incoming registrations and all payments received in-person or via mail.
Direct visitors to appropriate staff and inform visitors of basic safety rules.
Schedule access orientation and testing appointments.
Give tours of Pratt’s studios and facilities.

Office and Administrative Support:
Ensure that forms, catalogs, copier paper and office supplies are stocked.
Keep lobby and front desk areas clean.
Create studio access cards and maintain studio rental appointment book.
Maintain office bulletin boards.
Communicate with work study to make sure Front Desk is always staffed.
Troubleshoot office equipment such as the photocopier, fax machine, and postage meter.
Support development, administrative and education staff in mailings, proofreading, filing, and other tasks, as assigned.
Print and distribute class lists and waiver forms.

Qualifications:
Strong customer service skills
Competency with Microsoft Office Suite
File Maker Pro or other data base software proficiency
Punctuality and reliability
Ability to learn registration and payment software
Attention to detail
Arts background preferred

Special Abilities: Communicate effectively both orally and written. Ability to be trained on the job quickly, efficiently, and accurately. Ability to keep a positive demeanor under sometimes stressful work environment, with an ability to adapt to an evolving organizational structure.

It's All Greek to Me Exhibition Reception

Join us for the artist reception of Amanda Kindregan's newest works of linocut and vinyl block prints.

Saturday, Feb. 6th from 5 - 7 pm

For this new group of prints, Ms. Kindregan takes certain liberties with the Classical Greek Myths. Deities, creatures, and nymphs mingle in images of everyday ancient life, some true to mythology, and some placed in modern context.

Amanda Kindregan is a painter and printmaker with a BFA in Painting from the University of Washington (1995). Her preferred mediums are linoleum and vinyl block printing, and painting with gouache on paper. Her influences come from the past: Picasso and Warhol for their paintings and prints, but especially for their lovely line drawings; and by mid-century illustrators including Mary Blair and Hilary Knight. Ms. Kindregan lives in the beautiful Snoqualmie Valley with her husband and two daughters.

Announcement two we just got an email from Katie who organizes Indie Banditas Craft Fair. She is going to be opening her very own indie shop on Bainbridge island. Seems our sale got ideas of her own place launched. She will be opening on April 3rd and is currently looking for consignment vendors. It is always great to get in on the ground floor of a space! Some of you might be looking over the last year and thinking about what you might like to do differently in 2010. Or what you might like to accomplish in this new year. When you are your own boss it can be hard to hold yourself accountable with so many distractions.

We would like to try and help start 2010 off right. The beginning of this session we will have an open discussion on how to set some practical goals for yourself, some of the obstacles that might get in your way and how to overcome them to see your goals through. Then we will break up into smaller round table groups to have a more intimate discussion on what goals you might like to accomplish for yourself in this new year. Hearing each other and offering up tips to get things done can be very useful to succeeding in the items you set forth for yourself. We hope you can join us!

We are looking to sell Bluebottle as we are expecting our first child and hope to start a new business venture!

Even in these tough economic times Bluebottle is a profitable business ready to be taken over by someone who is familiar with the Do - It - Yourself indie aesthetic and would like to continue supporting local handmade, independent artists, crafters and designers.

Bluebottle showcases over 100 different artists in the boutique section and features a rotating monthly exhibition in the designated gallery space.

We showcase all of our artists on a consignment basis which would allow the buyer great flexibility in showcasing work that appeals to you! Artists are paid on a monthly basis after sales occur. There are no upfront costs for stocking work that may be considered risky and if something is not selling you always have the option of returning it to the artist. Monthly overhead is very little as you are not investing in inventory which may or may not sell!

We would be offering the buyer Bluebottles reputation as a leader in the indie craft community, heavy foot traffic in the ever growing Capitol Hill community, a strong mailing list of over 1200 customers, a thriving face book, twitter and blog presence in addition to a web site and online shop. I just visited Assemble last week and it is super cute! Assemble is located in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle and combines a gallery and retail space along with a workshop.

The workshop space it what intrigued me the most - the had a nice large table for working and I saw shelves filled with sewing machines! Each workshop includes materials, supplies and light refreshments.

Lisa Brawn works with salvaged century-old rough Douglas Fir beams. The wood is interesting not only in its history, but also in that it is oddly shaped and ornery. It has holes, knots, gouges and protruding rusty nails and is unlike the traditional flawless and smooth woodcut material. She does not create prints with the wood but creates an original piece from the block itself.

To find suitably rustic and rugged subjects for this wood, Lisa references popular culture personas and archetypes.

At Bluebottle is showcasing two series:

Quien es mas macho? features touch guys from 1920's silent cowboys to current icons such as the Fonzarelli and Pacino.

BUSKER features conic musicians inspired by a performance in the DC metro by concert violinist Joshua Bell who played Bach on his Stradivarius for 45 minutes as over 1,000 people rushed by.

Anson Maddocks at Gamma Ray Games

My neighbor two doors down from Bluebottle is a games store and they are having their their first art show appropriately with an artist and designer for the world-famous Magic: the Gathering collectible trading-card game.

Anson Maddocks will be showing a collection of his original paintings which represent his creative focus over the past 17 years. The Seattle-based artist will attend a reception at Gamma Ray Games to present these works and to autograph cards and artwork for fans.

As the title states the guide books focuses on eating and shopping but more importantly they focus on venues that are independent and locally owned. When I visit a new city I want to go visit all the shops and restaurants I couldn't visit anywhere else - these are the places that give you a real feel for the city you are visiting!

Jen Corace

One of my favorite things about being the Bluebottle intern is finding what new things Andrea brought into the store during the week when I come in on Sundays. Recently it was three prints by Jen Corace.

Awkward in any Situation

These prints of Victorian & Edwardian era women are from Corace's "Clementine" show at Art Star this past spring. Stemming from costuming research, the details in each print are delicate and lovely. They were in the window that Sunday and I was immediately enamored. I wasn't the only one. Dozens of women stopped to take a second look at them.

Improper Escort

From Rhode Island, Corace's fine art is represented by Motel Gallery in Portland, Oregon, and she does illustration as well. Her website has great examples of her work, but the best part is the games section. Playing dress up and solitaire with her designs is a fun and whimsical addition to a professional site and really shows her playful personality. If you're going to play computer solitaire, why wouldn't you play with a cute deck of cards?

Stitch And Swash

One of the recent success stories of a Seattle handmade designer getting major recognition has been Angie Bowlds of Stitch And Swash. Back in 2005, graphic designers Angie Bowlds and Nicole Sarsfield teamed up to create screen printed leather goods under the name The Crafty Devils. This partnership eventually lead to Bowlds starting Stitch And Swash.

A Stitch And Swash bag was bought at Velouria by a prop assistant for the movie Twilight, and it has been used as Bella's bag in both Twilight and New Moon. Bowld's story has been covered by the Seattle Weekly, NW Source, and been highlighted by Etsy.com.

In a very smart move, the Stitch And Swash etsy store and website now only sell the aptly renamed "Bella Bag". The $175 bag comes with a 5 week wait at the moment. Other Stitch And Swash designs can still be found online at The Crafty Devils website and in stores around Seattle. Velouria carries Bowld's latest line of bags.

What is your name and where are you located?
My name is Chellise (aka cinnamonsugarhearts), and I live in the wonderful city of Lakewood in Ohio- just outside of Cleveland and delightfully close to Lake Erie.

What are your favorite materials and why?
My fav materials are...well, honestly, whatever i can find in the remnant bin. I'm a sucker for a good deal, and i can never make up my mind when I'm standing in the middle of an aisle surrounded by bolts of fabric. in runner up positions though, I love working with fleece, felt, sequins, and quilting weight fabrics.

It began with Roy, cycloptic and delicious . He was baked from a magical gingerbread mix, and due to an icing miscalculation, only ended up with one eye. The baker felt bad for his misfortune and gave him a heart where the other eye should've gone. Ever since, he's been looking for love, and has a particular soft spot for ladies who bake. The patch, however, is just for flair. Ladies dig the patch.

To help him on his quest, he recreated that fated gingerbread mix, and assembled a love seeking legion. Some large, some small. Although, one went rogue (seen on the far right). Not much is known of his current whereabouts except that he left with bandeliers, a small mass of love seeking weapons, and a retro-fitted night vision eye.

How long does it usually take for you to complete a piece?
Hmm. it takes me longer than the average bear because each piece i make is hand sewn. most are based on patterns I've made, but I like to experiment with different fabrics and sizes. some pieces take on their own personality, and i get caught up in that sometimes. i also have a lil jellybean just learning to become mobile, so that pushes things back a bit, too :) as a rough estimate though, anywhere from less than a day to three days.

What are you excited about lately?
Getting my work out there! I'm a bit shy when it comes to things I make, so when I got selected for Plush You, I was super excitied. So excited that I may or may not have done the running man upon finding out. I will neither confirm, nor deny.
I'm working a few things for an Alice in Wonderland inspired show, and having a blast. I love the challenge of taking known characters, and trying to fuse it with my little plush family. The first one I finished a few weeks back was a septopi white rabbit. I think I may make another to keep for myself. It's hard to let things you make go sometimes. I'm also getting back into modelmaking & casting. I'd stopped while I was pregnant, but now I can't wait to try some things out!

Which super power would you prefer to have and why: the ability to fly or to be invisible?
In the movies, every time there's a character with the power to become invisible, something always goes wrong. So I choose flying! I'm a bit afraid of heights, but if I got to fly all the time, I'd get over it. And if possible, I'd love another set of arms & hands.

Some of these elusive creatures were born as septopi, seven tentacled and proud. Others were born as octopi, but had unfortunate accidents, thus marked with their own special band aids. Each one is an individual. Herman has just been pieced together by his master. Watch out if he loses his top, that brain of his may come a-tumbling out.

What's your dream project?
There are a whole gang of things I want to make for my daughter, like a huge plush dollhouse. I'd love to make superduper sized versions of some of my pieces and create whole plush worlds for them, like in an art installation, even if it just turns out to be in different rooms of my house. I'd also like to make greeting cards

What did you do last Saturday afternoon?
I made apple french toast & a retro-inspired plush oven! It's a pink & adorable. still trying to figure out where to put eyes on it though.

Here is what she had to say:

They have all kinds of tools and a nice place to make things. It's not just for techy people. They also have sewing machines, and after talking to them an embroidery machine soon as well. I hope all kinds of people will use spaces like this and get to know each other and inspire all kinds of projects. My favorite part is that they are open until midnight, which I think could be a huge deal for many people. For instance I work until 7pm and have difficulty meeting other crafters/makers. Many craft groups meet too early for me to make it to them. I think lots of us night owls get a bit left out.

This would have been a great class for me about 7 years ago - I learned all these basics by trial and error. I think this class is a great idea as it will get you through the basics as most photoshop classes want to get in to all the crazy details that we just don't need.

Graphic designers aren't the only ones who use Photoshop. So do fine artists, as an essential tool for cataloging and promoting their work. In this workshop, designed specifically for fine artists, we'll show you how to:

- Understand different file types so you can ask the photographer shooting your art for the appropriate file

- Make slides and Powerpoint files from Photoshop files

- Change a RAW file into a TIFF, JPG, and thumbnail

- Make the right size and resolution file so it will print properly in postcards and catalogs

- Change the size of images to specific requests from galleries, call for artists, or web sites

- Cropping, retouching, and color adjusting images

- Place two photos together into one image

- Add text to an image

- Add borders to your image and place your image on a canvas

- Change the background color or canvas

- Understanding the basics of color calibration between monitors and printers

- Overview of Giclee prints

What is your name and where are you located?
My name is Erin Ellis and I am living in the great Pine Tree State, better known as Maine.

"Hedgehog Chubbikin"
approximately 4 inches tall

What are your favorite materials and why?
When I'm working on my Chubbikins, I like plain old cotton cloth because it's easy to work with. I like to get a bundle of fat quarters for a variety of colors and patterns. I also like to use pen and ink, watercolors, and copic markers. Copic markers are really the best that I have found - the colors are great and they blend easily.

How long does it usually take for you to complete a piece?
I usually work on a bunch at a time, but if I worked on one Chubbikin from start to finish it would probably take about two hours. Unless it's one of the more complicated ones (such as dragons or phoenixes). They take longer - especially since I tend to drag my feet a little...

What are you excited about lately?
I'm excited that it's starting to warm up and smell like Summer. I'm excited my Chubbikins are being sold in an actual store here in Maine (the Maine Crafts Association). I have a fairy tale sticker book coming out soon published by Dover Books. Also, I'm excited about seeing lots of movies this summer and getting a hair cut!

Which super power would you prefer to have and why: the ability to fly or to be invisible?
I would rather have the ability to fly. I hate driving, so being able to fly would make getting around so much easier!

What's your dream project?
I really want to make paper dolls - if I got to illustrate any subject I would be excited. But my dream paper doll project would have to involve movie monsters, Star Wars, or classic musicals.

What did you do last Saturday afternoon?
Last Saturday I went down to the SoWa Open Market in Boston with my best bud to see if we want to get a table there later in the summer. Then we went back to her house and watched the original Star Wars trilogy and ate chocolate pie. Seriously.

What is your name and where are you located?

Michelle Kuen Suet Fung. Vancouver, Canada.

How does where you live influence you as an artist?

Vancouver is an international centre for conceptual art. While I went through conceptual training, and learnt a great deal from it, I have realized that it doesn't come naturally to me. Vancouver is now slowly accepting manga-influenced art. I believe that artists should create what they are truly passionate for. I am very passionate for cute and dark drawings.

Did you attend art school? How do you think that affects your art?

Yes, I attended the Fine Art Programme at the University of British Columbia. I really appreciated the programme as it trained me conceptually and developed my thinking ability. Fine Art has encouraged me to investigate meanings, whereas some other creative fields focus on the visual relationship between a message and an audience.

How long does each piece take?

It varies. Some pieces are done in less than four hours. The last piece I did for a group show "Textbook History" in Portland, Oregon took 20 hours. Some take even longer.

What is your dream project?

I would like to build a cute castle.

What are you reading?

I am just finishing The $ 12 Million Stuffed Shark by Don Thompson. It's been recommended by an artist colleague. With no exaggeration, it's one of the most thrilling and informative book on the contemporary art world today. Highly recommending the book to anyone who enjoys reading.

What are you looking forward to this fall?

Making a lot of art.

What is your name and where are you located?

Suzanne from Vancouver, Canada.

How does where you live influence you as an artist?

Birds, pacific northwest and a bit of British influence which I adore. We have a Queen!

Did you attend art school? How do you think that affects your art?

Yes, I attended art school and for that time I was very focused doing full time art, thinking only about art. I had some great teachers and still am in contact with some of them. I went to art school in the earlyish 80's - how about that! I still take workshops and attend lectures whenever I can.

How long does each piece take?

I work in groups or series. Once I get an idea established I can knock off quite a few.

What is your dream project?

Big, huge work, and I would like to do the Queen. My inspiration comes from the Sex Pistols. It's been burning in my mind for a long, long time. Also nothing would make me happier than to see my kids book published.

What is on your playlist?

Amos Lee, Neil Young forever, John Prine, Sarah McLauchlan - canadian, and Scott Bacci- trumpet!

What are you reading?

Shamaram, The Good Earth, and The Corporation. I do book club with seniors.

What are you looking forward to this fall?

I love the fall. It's the best. September is my anniversary- married for 26 years! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah and going away for a week to the beach. It rains a lot here as you know and I love it. I love when the beaches are vacant and gray and I can walk the dogs by myself.

TONIGHT: Plush Class at Stitches

Join plush artist Coco Howard of Softlife and Kristen Rask of the incomparable Schmancy Toys at Stitches on Saturday October 3rd from 4:00 to 6:00pm and learn the fine art of making Sweater Beasts! In this class you will learn a very simple, yet versatile technique that will allow you to turn your unwanted sweaters into excellent beasts that will amaze your friends and maybe even your family. Only basic sewing skills are needed. All supplies will be provided. Cost is 20.00 for a two hour tutorial.

Bio:
Coco Howard started Softlife in 2007 as an umbrella company for her various artistic endeavors. She makes plush creatures, engages in amateur photography, creates needle felted wall hangings, sculpture, and installations, and teaches creature making classes at various elementary and middle schools in Seattle. Her work has been exhibited in the US and Japan.Coco is devoted whole heartedly to fighting the soft fight each and every day.

What is your name and where are you located?
Berry Holz. Minneapolis, Minnesota.

How does where you live influence you as an artist?

It's a beautiful, green city & I love the river.

Did you attend art school? How do you think that affects your art?

I was an art history major, then switched to design, but never finished college completely for anything. I think that not finishing affects me in sometimes in subject choice, although you might not always see inferiority complexes running rampant. Stylistically, I'm definitely guided by design principles - balance is my favorite.

How long does each piece take?

Some take weeks (months) to figure out, some only take hours. I hope & think they all come out looking easy & like they wouldn't have taken me long at all.

What is your dream project?

Right now I'm dreaming of a polyptych kind of thing with geese, bicycles, trains, etc weaving in & out of a landscape, influenced by a painting I did recently called 'iconic landscape with train cars & geese'.

What is on your playlist?

Thanks to the 'Where the Wild Things Are' trailer, Arcade Fire all the time. Locally Solid Gold, & my brother's old band Anchorhead. & perennially Steve Earle 'Train A Comin'.

What are you reading?

The Once & Future King for the millionth time. I just finished a 'teen read', Hunger Games, for a book club - it was good!

What are you looking forward to this fall?

Working on paintings for the Endangered show at Bluebottle in January - Really, really looking forward to that. & a trip to San Francisco, yay!It's not always about weather I realize, but this can be said: We are coming off the most beautiful summer I've ever seen in my life; luckily fall is not a tough sell in MN.

Tad along with his business partner Dan Padavic co-run a silk screen, letterpress and design studio called Vahalla Studios. They specialize in silkscreen goodies such as posters, apparel and greetings.

Each month they will feature the work from their studio as well as changing exhibitions from some of the leading artist in the world of graphic design, illustration and printmaking.

What is your name and where are you located?
Hello! I’m Pilli Pilli, (after the red, rather small, yet fiercely hot African Chillipeppers) because I like life spicy and full of colour! (My real name is Katrien though…)

I’m Belgian, but last year I moved to a tiny village, hidden in the Northern Italian Hills…

What are your favorite materials and why?

Wool! Most definitely! It’s so natural, soft and cosy, not to mention versatile! I can’t think of any other material that offers so many possibilities; the raw fiber, yarn, fabric, felt,… I’m using it all!

My current favourite is an incredibly beautiful (yet machine washable) Merino yarn that I found here in Italy. It comes in really sweet candy-cane colours that are just perfect for the rather dreamy softies I’m making lately!

How long does it usually take for you to complete a piece?

It usually takes me up to three days to finish one of my crocheted softies… that is if I don’t get distracted, of course. The countryside can be devilishly alluring at times… There is always something new to discover out there… some new birds to watch, a new cloud drifting by or some new kind of fruit waiting to be picked.

What are you excited about lately?
Summer!!! Being born in July I’m a real child of summer, and I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but summer just happens to be the season that I feel best. I especially love the early summer mornings when the air is still crisp and the birds chirp and twitter and peep about their nocturnal adventures and their plans for the day. I already feel the change coming on when spring sets off to give colour to the sky and to make the flowers bloom… Love it Love it Love it!

Which super power would you prefer to have and why: the ability to fly or to be invisible?
That one is easy: I would love the be able to fly! I’m a real traveller, you see. I just cannot imagine living my life without seeing new places, smelling new perfumes and tasting new flavours! It’s really like a sort of medicine to me… On those days that I feel a little blue or restless, I just love to get in the car and go for a drive. Sometimes that really is all it takes: a change of panorama to spice things up again! So being able to take off for the wild blue yonder certainly sounds appealing!

What's your dream project?
Mmmmmmmmmm, a difficult one, since I have so many projects swimming in my head at the moment… But if I had to pick one: I have been thinking of making a series of soft sculptures portraying Indian gods and goddesses that have won my heart during my travels to India. First of all, because they’re so colourful and fun. But that’s not all: the fact that they have so many intricate and meaningful details seems like a real challenge for a little perfectionista like me!

What did you do last Saturday afternoon?
Well, crochet of course !

What are your favorite materials and why?
I'm a crocheter and knitter, so cute little furry balls of yarn tend to be my favorite materials to work with. Alicia in a yarn store is a like a kid in candy store--I'm filled with wonder and excitement. I'm also partial to corduroy, glycerine, clay and buttons.

How long does it usually take for you to complete a piece?
All of my crochet plush pieces are of small, handheld size, so each takes me roughly 20-60 minutes.

What are you excited about lately?
I'm excited for biking weather in New York; I enjoy planning long adventurous rides that take me to parks, cupcake shops, botanical gardens, hidden places and anything else under the sun. I also have some ambitious crochet-clothing projects in mind. Oh, and it's almost berry pie-making season!

Which super power would you prefer to have and why: the ability to fly or to be invisible?
Hmm, tough question! I'd say to be invisible, because that way I can sneak into various places like movie theaters or Martha Stewart Living brainstorming sessions.

What's your dream project?
Wow, there are so many. Anything and everything causes a sensory overload in me and I'm constantly thinking about creating. Hmm. Currently I want to do an ongoing photo project that combines literary quotes with images, which came to me after reading a couple of Anais Nin novels. I haven't fleshed it out yet, but the idea would be to take quotes that you like, that really move you and almost go on a photo-scavenger hunt of sorts while out and about to find visual representations of them.

I'd also like to turn my Safety Cone Adventures into picture books!

What did you do last Saturday afternoon?
Last Saturday afternoon, I sewed capes! I volunteer for a wonderful non-profit here in New York called Only Make Believe: they put on theatrical performances and shows for kids in hospitals and one of their volunteer opportunities is called Cape Crusade--I'm a Cape Crusader! Which means that I sew adult and kid-sized capes to be used in the performances.

Andrea Porter, owner of Bluebottle Art Gallery, is featured in this film about the rise of the DIY art, craft and design movement! I will get to see if I made a fool of myself right along with everyone else! Also I will be a speaker on the panel on Sunday at the 1:00 showing.

First-time filmmaker Faythe Levine takes crafting seriously. So do the 80-some people she interviews in her well-crafted (pun intended) documentary about the growing art community that coheres around a belief in DIY skill and resourceful creativity. Many members of the indie crafting community spent their childhoods at flea markets, yard sales and thrift stores. Levine journeyed 19,000 miles around the country to discover what these crafters are up to today: selling mittens as band merchandise, knitting sweaters around street signs and networking with each other online, in stores and at craft fairs. This is a compelling look at the exuberant world of contemporary crafting.

Columbia City Gallery in Seattle is looking for artisians to showcase in their shop area. 50/50 consignment basis. This is a great gallery/shop in the histroic Columbia City neighborhood of Seattle. Matthew has been showcasing with them for about a year and they are very organized and promt payers. Always important - we know working on consignment can be tough but they are really great about tracking and keeping on top of things. It's a great way to get your work out into a marketplace where retailers are slowing down trying new wholesale purchases.

What is your name and where are you located?
My name is Pang Tubhirun from Shepherdstown, West Virginia

What are your favorite materials and why?
My favorite materials are the ones I work with the most: printed cotton, felt, and, soft fleece! I have a love for printed cotton because I enjoy going to the fabric store and spending at least an hour touching and ogling over them. A lot of my pieces involve all three, but I work with felt and fleece for the most part, so I love it because of that, plus fleece is so soft! How could you not love it?

How long does it usually take for you to complete a piece?
The time I spent on each piece really depends on the size. A piece like the Vampire Strawberry takes me about an hour, but a plaque piece (like the crab) could take several days. I once spend a whole week (plus some odd days) making a robot, completed with chalk drawn designs the shadow box that the robot was displayed from. That was probably my biggest, most time consuming piece to date.

What are you excited about lately?
Wow! What am I not excited about? If I could name a few, I'm really excited about Tim Burton's remake of Alice in Wonderland and the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and being a part of Plush You! My boyfriend and I have never been to Seattle, so we are planning a road trip there this fall to be a part of the opening! I'm open to suggestions for any good restaurants or places to visit!

Which super power would you prefer to have and why: the ability to fly or to be invisible?
I'd chose the ability to fly. I could get from point A to point B so much faster, therefore, I'd get more done!

What's your dream project?
My dream project is to write/illustrate a children's book. Particulary of a story my grandfather used to tell me when I was a child. My Tha (grandfather in Thai) had a wonderful imagination, and he loved to tell me a story about the poo who slayed a Giant with some of his oddball buddies. (you heard it here first!)...Sometimes I still call him in Thailand to ask if he could tell it to me again... I want to illustrate the whole book using handmade plush characters and paper cut backgrounds (maybe a future collaboration with the talented Jayme McGowen of Roadside Projects). After the first copy is published, I will personally deliver it to him...I think he'd be so proud!

What did you do last Saturday afternoon?
I spent last Saturday afternoon slaying a dragon hidden in a secret cave on the C & O canal with my Boston Terrier/super pup, Remy. Afterward, I took a long bath and read Fables...in all honesty, last Saturday afternoon the FINGS and I had a booth at the Shepherdstown Street Fest, my town's annual festival with food, music, and local vendors.

Artist Lisa Price grew up in the Chicago suburbs and spent her summers gardening, canning, and visiting the farmers market with her grandmother in northern Indiana. That is where she began her fascination with nature and the colors and designs of the fifties. She received a B.F.A. in printmaking in 2001, and now brings you modern block print housewares with vintage flair. Lisa resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she works out of her home studio.

Viking Poster at Flatstock

What is your name and where are you located?
My name is Tanyalee and I am located in the ever exciting city of Whittier in CA. Whittier is about 20 mins outside of LA and full of super cute old houses and old people.

What are your favorite materials and why?
I looooove any kind of weird fabric print and mixing a bunch of different types of fabric. I am the nerd that gets excited about the remnant table. I love digging through it to see what kind of hidden treasure you can find. Even if I find a tiny piece I like to add it into on one my little creations and see how it brings it all together. I am also currently obsessed with wool felt and making little hair things and pins...I am currently trying to make a different pin for every day...I am at 150 right now. My friends keep texting and messageing me ideas :)

How long does it usually take for you to complete a piece?
It depends...sometimes I draw out a little friend and take forever to find the right fabric...I always have an idea of what kind of fabric I want for it and it can take a long time to find it. Once I have everything ready it can take an hour or two to make a piece. It feel like 10mins because time flies while I work.

Acorn Hairclips
These clips are made from wool felt and metal hairclips they measure around 2 1/2 inches square, they have hand sewn lines around the top of the acorn.

What are you excited about lately?
Lately I have been really excited about making my very own set of alphabet flash cards!!! My husband is British and he was telling me all about the weird names they had for cartoon characters. It got me thinking of making cards with strange alphabet names. I just started this and since I want to paint each little critter I know it is going to take a bit of time.

Which super power would you prefer to have and why: the ability to fly or to be invisible?
I would love to be invisible!!! Then I could pretend the mess I made in my studio never happened...therefore no cleaning up!!! yay!!

What's your dream project?
I would love to fill a store window or room with a ton of sea creature plush and woodland plush...I would love to set up a scene and have everything in it be made out of plush...I think that would be the coolest project!!! anyone have a store with an extra window? he he he (we DO! so Tanyalee will be showcasing her work in October in our fromt window as well as in the show!!)

What did you do last Saturday afternoon?
I caught up on a few plush ideas and played with my daughter and husband...Saturdays are great for staying in my PJ's all day long :)

Flatstock Poster Exhibition is just around the corner! strawberryluna a lovely artist who we showcase will be showcasing her amazing collection of works at Flatstock with many, many other talented poster artists. I love this event but might not make it this year as you do have to pay to get into Bumbershoot to go see it.
